Rye Whiskies have become scarce and
little-known, but in recent years have been experiencing a comeback.
Rye is a cousin of
bourbon,
but it has a different mash bill (mix of grains), having over 51% rye
(go figure!), the rest being a blend of corn, wheat and barley.
Rye tends to be drier and more bitter than
bourbon. It makes a great Manhattan, and is absolutely essential
for a real Old-Fashioned. |
A Special Note about Old Potrero: So the
guy at Anchor Steam (the
venerable San Francisco Brewer), Fritz Maytag, decided to make some
whiskey the REAL old fashioned American way, before bourbon was even
invented. It is 100% rye based, and is aged in uncharred new
American oak casks. This may seem technical (or even trivial), but
it is REALLY good, expensive, and interesting. And we have it!
